Cobbs Corner: I noticed this morning (26/9) they have recommenced work yet again. What is going on?- DH

Editor: Transco had been looking for a gas leak. When I looked in the afternoon the roundabout was clear - but there was a large pile of broken tarmac dumped in Lawrie Park Road. The weather is not encouraging me to checkout if it is still there ....

I have lived in the Sydenham area for the past 20 years, originally living in the old Nat West halls of residence on Lawrie Park Road. To be honest, I dont think it has really changed a great deal over the period. Whilst people bemoan the fact that other areas (East Dulwich for example) have become more 'gentrified', I think I prefer Sydenham the way it is. It has a great cross section of people living here, and is still relatively affordable, whereas the likes of East Dulwich have become so expensive, the property prices have priced 'real' people out of the area. If people want to spend 350k on a terraced house, then let them live in East Dulwich. To me, both Sydenham and Forest Hill are two of Londons gems. Sydenham could do with a decent pub though. Why The Greyhound was ever allowed to be so badly messed up, astonishes me. It used to have an amazing bar, which split the 'vault' and the 'lounge'. Now it is just another characterless pub, and as for its exte! rior colour, Arena Pubs must be run by some pretty tasteless (and colourblind) characters.

I used to spend ages checking out Kirks Cameras, and was sad to see it go. Luckily we still have the book shop, and there are a couple of interesting shops further down the high street, one of them a middle eastern shop, amongst the more run-of-the-mill stuff.

We have some superb parks - Sydenham Wells is a great place to spend a peaceful afternoon; it's only the transmitting tower which reminds you where you are. Crystal Palace Park is also excellent, if only I could figure out what Bromley Council have spent all the money on (apart from putting some strange paths in, which appear to wash away with the rain).

Great web site, I will return to waffle on at some later point. - SF

Wholeheartdly agree with the comment about the onslaught of 'one pound shops'.... how many do we need ??!! Dulwich and CP are striding ahead of Sydenham. They have numerous pubs, bars, restaurants and shops offering diversity which attracts people to those areas. It annoys me as Sydenham has far superior travel links and is crying out for an injection of street cred !! - DL

Re Supermarkets: this is a load of **** and go and get a really job - LLL

Re SavaCentre: Local traders do not offer the opening times and products required by most people. I have frequently found local shop keepers rude and unhelpful - despite all those at Wise the chemist who are excellent. I have always made it a policy of mine to use local suppliers such as bakers, florists e.t.c but I cannot find good quality at a reasonable price locally - hence using Sainsbury. Sydenham residents need a better high street that better reflects Sydenham residents not the current mish mash of £1 shops and cheap clothes boutiques. It needs more investment. There is money being spent in areas such as Dulwich and Crystal Palace as there is nothing in Sydenham - that is why Sainsbury is so well used! - Anon

How about a nice pub/bar serving food for the late twenty's and over 30's ? I feel Crystal Palace is taking all of the potentail customers and money. CP is moving in a much better direction than Sydenham. If I want a bite to eat I head up the road .... and I don't want that !! - Daniel L

I have recently moved to Sydenham and live in the victorian terrace of maisonettes at the Sydenham end of Lawrie Park Road. I have been trying to find out the history of them, can anyone help ? - Gill

Re Cobbs Roundabout: Friday 10 Sept 04 I have just passed the Kirkdale roundabout and noticed that after a shower of rain there is flooding by the Greyhound Pub. most likely caused by the drains being blocked after the road works. Can the drains be cleaned out, and while we are on the subject why can't all the drains in Lewisham be cleaned, most are blocked and cleaning would stop flooding and also help keep the roads in good repair. Prevention is better than cure !! - MJF

Re Cobbs Roundabout: Do Lewisham Council not know that since being in Europe the size and weight of lorries have got bigger so what sense is there in making the road narrower? Still what does it matter all they have to do is get more money from the rate payer to put it right latter. I bet they don't do their housekeeping the same way. - MJF

Does anyone know if there are any plans for the now nearly empty row of shops on Bell Green Road opposite the Sainsbury's Savacentre? Also - the area that has been fenced off (but the fences keep getting pushed over by god only knows who) seems to have become a dumping ground for flytippers. Does anyone know if there are any plans to stop / prevent this happening? I saw an old mattress "walk" past my window towards the area about 2 months ago - I can't believe that people are so blatantly fly tipping and have so little pride or respect for their home area. - ES

Re Cobbs Roundabout: Just discovered your site whilst trying to get the 'phone no of the sorting office. Great stuff! Keep it up. Glad there is a voice against the madness now going on at Cobbs corner. Keep your eye on the new railings erected on Sydenham Bridge - I give them 2 weeks tops before some dick brain demolishes them. Remember the nice white posts and chain link fence on the roundabout at Gipsy Hill/Dulwich Wood Park? - same principle. - Brian P

Can anyone give me any info on The Granada Cinema. My Mum worked there for many years. If there was any photos it would be nice to see them. - Mark C

Editor - There appears to have been three cinemas in Sydenham - The Queens Hall Cinema (demolished after bomb damage in 1943 and now the site of the Narborhood Centre), the Sydenham Cinematography Theatre (in Silverdale?) and the State Cinema which became the Granada on the corner of Girton Road. I only have a photograph of the site before it was built!

Can anyone tell me what is happening down at Lower Sydenham. You have so much land by Sainsbury not being used. - Mark C

Editor - the answer is <here>

Can anyone tell me how Kirtley rd, Lower Sydenham aquired its name and when? any info much appreciated- Phil

I'm rather confused too as to why Lawrie park road is closed on both sides! it doesn't make sense as there are no road works going on!- Taz

Editor - Traffic turning right out of and into Lawrie Park Road at Kirkdale could cause a problem with the roadworks. But that is no excuse to ban most of the traffic (and buses) which turn left at that junction and send people on unnecessary longer routes along residential roads. Just another example to an unthinking approach to the people of Sydenham IMHO.

My grandfather HARRY BAINES had dental practices in Sydenham from approx 1920 until his death in 1937. Does anyone have any information about him or his practices. - Michael

I grew up in and around Sydenham, from the years 1942-1964. It was a very comfortable place to live. As a child I had no fear of riding my bike or walking in the main street. The old Granada Cinema was a place of early courtships, and Jimmy Small's Dance Studio next to the railway station an old haunt for me and my friends. I married the 'boy' who lived in the Off Licence and we set off to Australia in 1964, where we remain. It's sad to see the pictures of Sydneham now. I wonder if Cobbs Corner is still the same? - Patricia from Australia

Editor replies - Cobbs Corner closed as a department store many years ago. Some shop units moved in - the most prominent being a Bridal Shop. The rest is rented out as offices (The Regent Business Centre), The LA Fitness Centre and a nightclub (Twilights - now closed) plus an apartment in the cupola. It is rumoured that the nightclub and offices may be redeveloped as apartments.

This is a very useful website. I've lived in Sydenham for a number of years and have never heard of some of the things I found out here. I plan to start a petition on Monday 26th July 2004 to get Sydenham the tube. - I hope people listen to me because I'm only 15 :)

Where have all the trees and grass gone in Sydenham - an environmental disaster - who is to blame. My husband's family were market gardeners in Sydenham (they lived in the wooden cottages in Willow Walk, sadly these were demolished to make way for hideous housing), in the early 1800s and upto just before WW1 - I bet they are turning in their graves (are they still there?). - Iris, a former resident of Sydenham now of Sunbury, Australia.
