Tube to Sydenham?
Yes - there is a cunning plan by the Strategic Rail
Authority to spend £1 billion extending the existing East London Line
northwards and southwards. Exactly how far is still a little vague - as is the
eventual completion date. 2010 is often mentioned.
This would really put Sydenham on the London Transport
Map. The effect on house prices and rents could be quite dramatic for what is
now one of the most inexpensive areas in inner London.
The basic plan for the southern extensions is to build a
short link from the tube line to enable the tube trains to continue to run on
the South Central railway lines - with one branch coming through Forest Hill to
Sydenham and on to Crystal Palace or West Croydon.
The plan was stalled until July 2003 by a legal
challenge. This has now been swept away and some preparatory work appears to
have been done in the former Bishopsgate Goods Yard to enable the line to run
northward. |
