David Kernaghan, 38, of Queenswood Road Sydenham was
one of a gang of four professional burglars who staged spectacular heists on
high profile London targets including the BT HQ, PriceWaterhouse HQ, the Royal
College of Art in Kensington, Asprey's in Regent Street, The Savoy and the
University of Westminster. Their total haul was estimated to be around
£1.25 million and included emeralds, sapphires and valuable computer
systems.
They defied high-tech security systems and used
advanced mountaineering techniques to break into the towering office blocks
which even included clambering across the roof of London Bridge station to
attack the adjoining PWC offices.
Police identified Kernaghan from CCTV pictures and he
was spotted driving in Central London. In attempting to escape Kernaghan hit
several parked cars and injured a pedestrian.
Three more members of the gang were rounded up two
months later in Dulwich. They were all jailed last week at Middlesex Guildhall
Court - Kernaghan for 4½ years. All had previous records for theft. None
of the computer equipment has ever been recovered and, it is believed, the
computers were probably 'stolen to order'. Some jewellery was found.
