The 2005 Lewisham Business Awards were
presented at an gala ceremony attended by about 300 people at the Laban Dance
Centre on March 31st. The Laban itself has won the highest architectural award
in the country for its innovative design and is the jewel in Deptford's crown
(below).
Over 100 businesses entered the Lewisham Business
Awards and had waited until the ceremony to find out if they were shortlisted
or winners. Winners were presented with a unique silver award, individually
designed and created by Lewisham artist Ndidi Ekubia.
Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, said: The
Lewisham Business Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the skills, enthusiasm
and dedication of owners, managers and staff. I am delighted to congratulate
the first-ever winners."
Our very own Kirkdale Bookshop was surprised to walk
away with the 'Best Customer Service' award. Not a surprise to their many
customers perhaps! They were also finalists in the overall award but were
pipped at the post by a office design company.
Kirkdale Bookshop is a bit of a misnomer these days.
The Gallery now has an impressive history of exhibitions and has become so
popular that artists are queuing up until next year to present their work in
Sydenham. Book signings are also popular - Joan Alcock recently signed her new
Sydenham & Forest Hill - a guide which you can just see in the
centre of the picture above. A wide range of Naxos CDs are also on display and
the whole catalogue is available at a few days notice. At £4.99 these are
an excellent way to try out music you may never of heard of and Naxos
recordings regulary come top of Radio 3's CD Review bargain choices and not
infrequently best overall.
Do pop in and look at the strange metalwork that bears
the Lewisham crest.... (left)
