Sydenham Road
Transco main replacement works and service connections between Silverdale and Mayow Road. Works to start in early February. Expect delays and loss of some on-street parking.

Wells Park Road
21st Feb for 2 weeks. Mains connections requiring road closure. Road will be closed between Longton Avenue and Taylors Lane. Buses will divert via Sydenham Hill and Westwood Hill.

Woolstone Road j/w Perry Vale
28th Feb for 2 weeks. Gas main connections requiring the use of temporary traffic signals at the junction. This will inevitably cause delays in the whole area while the signals are in operation.

Mayow Road, between Perry Vale and Dacres Road
8th – 11th March Carriageway Resurfacing Program. Expect delays due to lane closures, temporary signals or local diversions.

Road Works: About Transco's Gas Pipeline Programme

Kirkdale on 26/09/2004

Most of our gas comes through cast iron pipelines laid around a century ago under our roads. These are subject to corrosion and landshift - particulary under the pressure of heavy traffic. Hence there is a safety programme to replace 56,000 miles of iron pipes that lie within 30 metres of residential property. That includes most of London's main roads!

The iron mains are being replaced with polyethylene pipes. Polyethylene is a plastic material, is flexible and is highly resistant to corrosion. The life of a PE main is currently expected to be of at least 80 years.

Where possible Transco use technology such as ‘no dig’ techniques, trenchless working and directional drilling. But inevitably a lot of Sydenham's roads will have to be dug up in the traditional way. And as the old Bell Green gasworks supplied a large part of South East London we are at the hub of a complex network that will take many years to replace.
