News: Rotary Club to close

The Rotary Club of Forest Hill & Sydenham decided on 26th April 2005 to dissolve the Club. The Club will close at the end of the Rotary year on June 30th and will bring to an end 69 years continuous service to the communities of SE23 & SE26.

The Club met nearly every week at the Cobbs Store (later Twilights). In 2003 the Club moved to its current home at The Golden Lion.

Rotary is the world's largest service organisation with 29,000 clubs founded in 2005 and earlier this year celebrated its centennial. Rotary is expanding in Eastern Europe and Asia Pacific but times change in Forest Hill & Sydenham.

Fewer young professionals can find the time and space to meet every week to plan and enable help to the community. In only ten years our membership has shrunk from 30 to just 12 as older members retire and move away.

FH&S Rotary founded the local Talking Newspaper, funded and built the Rotary Day Centre and set up the Crystal Palace Fireworks. We support St Christopher's Hospice, the Voluntary Care Centre and many other organisations. And of course Father Christmas' tour of his FH&S kingdom.

We plan to keep some of these activities going as individuals. The Rotary spirit will continue - just the club will fade away.
