The old fishmongers reopened in January 2005 as a pawnbroker. Sad to see one needed in Sydenham especially when we have a Credit Union to help to get loans at reasonable rates.

Diversity Hairstylists is now Peppermint. This is branch number three joining the Walworth Road and Bromley branches of chain that is proving very popular. The shop was packed on our first visit. Godd luck - Sydenham needs shops like this!

Esso has been Total-ed. Top picture taken 02/10/04, bottom picture 17/10/04. This garage lost nearly all its trade for many weeks when this part of Kirkdale was closed to through traffic.

Not exactly a new arrival but the Video Rental store has converted a substantial part of floor area into an Internet Cafe with around 20 screens. It will be interesting to see how that matches the demand.

The former builders materials trade store is now a Payless. Maybe the combination of Pound Plus and Payless may encourage shoppers to cross the bridge and reinvigorate this area.

The former Jan's Hairdressers just over the bridge near the Kirkdale Bookshop had been empty for about a year - but re-opened last summer as Pound Plus. Didn't last a year. The roadworks fiasco was no help.

Sad to see the venerable Kirk's Cameras close on July 1st. The shop has, for many years, mainly traded in vintage cameras - first by mail order and more lately on the internet. It appears they will continue with that from their new base in Deal, Kent.

Right next to Kirk's Cameras - Behind Bars appeared and disappeared in a very short time. This corner has always been difficult to trade because of the lack of parking. Even cyclists are kept away by the long lengths of 'safety' railings.
