Friday 6th May a No 75 bus lost a wing mirror. Small
problem but the bus was taken out of service. The experienced driver even knew
a shortcut back to Catford Garage. Unfortuneately the shortcut was cut short -
or rather the bus was when it hit this railway bridge on Southend Lane near
Sainsbury's SavaCentre.
Not a single decker like the 181 in the picture but a
proper double decker. Well, until it made contact. Up to £50,000 damage
and the driver's career ended (she resigned after being suspended pending
investigation). There were no passengers on board.
There is a super picture of the decapitated mess in
today's Sun. We called and asked if we could use it. Are you prepared to pay a
three figure sum we were asked. Considering it was a tiny picture and the press
use Sydenham Town's for free - and I'm not rich - means you can't see it here.
But if you click on the link below - you can see it - all legal and above
board. Silly old internet world isn't it?
There is a long record of decapitations by this bridge.
You can't have more warnings. People in Sydenham had hoped when the SavaCentre
was built that they could find money to reconstruct this bottleneck. But no.
Perhaps this is a wake-up call for the Phase 2&3 development plans. They
will further increase traffic pressure and the public transport option cannot
use high capacity buses.
