Blow for Sydenham Music

RPO manager, Robert Trory SM Music Director & Steve Bullock Mayor of Lewisham - 30/06/04

A happy day in June 2004 when the RPO, Sydenham Music & Lewisham Council celebrated the coming of the RPO to a residency at Catford Broadway under the direction of Sydenham Music and with the financial backing of the council.

Lewisham have now decided, in a shock announcement to Sydenham Music, that the Council will sponsor future Catford Broadway concerts directly with the RPO and Sydenham Music will have no future role. This is a blow to the work the supporters of Sydenham Music have put into building an audience for world class classical music to critical acclaim - first in St Bart's Church, Sydenham - and taking it to the refurbished Catford Broadway Theatre.

This, we are assured, will not effect future programmes of music at St Barts by the Orchestra of St Bartholomew and invited chamber groups and soloists. Indeed it would appear Lewisham will be increasing their support of the 'Sydenham Summer Festival'.

Below we quote the Sydenham Music Newsletter and the response of the Council. If you have any comment on this story - please visit:

presenting london's finest musicians

The shock news reached us by letter last week that Lewisham Council has decided that, as from the end of this season, Sydenham Music will not be promoting concerts at the Broadway Theatre, Catford. The Council is to enter into a direct relationship with the RPO that will cut out Sydenham Music, the originators of the RPO residency, from their role as promoters and will also cut Robert Trory from his role as Music Director and Conductor of the series.

No convincing reason has been given for this move. In correspondence with Sydenham Music, the Mayor and his staff, have acknowledged that the concerts have been a great success both musically and in building new audiences. While audiences elsewhere have been falling, attendances in Catford have exceeded targets and been growing rapidly. They have also recognised ‘the fantastic work undertaken by Sydenham Music’ and paid ‘special tribute to Robert Trory and his drive and determination.’ This makes their decision all the more incomprehensible and upsetting.

Sydenham Music is asking all its friends and supporters to come to the final concert to be promoted by them in the Broadway Theatre, Catford, on Sunday March 13th. This is your opportunity to show your solidarity with Sydenham Music and your last chance to experience the special atmosphere that Sydenham Music has created in Catford by bringing to the area the very best that classical music has to offer.

We would like, above all, to finish with a full hall. The concert itself will as exciting as any we have presented with the young Russian virtuoso violinist Sergei Dogadin playing the breath-taking Paganini Concert followed by Tchaikovsky’s brilliant Fourth Symphony.

This will be your last chance in Catford to endorse all that Sydenham Music has stood for and achieved!

Lewisham Council Response

Sydenham Music have achieved a great deal with their festival, education work and now the RPO concerts at the Broadway. We are determined to build on this success and the mayor is personally committed to keep the focus on classical music, as its popularity continues to grow among Lewisham's residents.

A unique opportunity has been presented by the RPO to deliver an incredible educational programme and another series of concerts in the borough through a direct agreement with Lewisham Council. At the same time it has been possible to increase the support to Sydenham Music for their summer festival.

Mayor Steve Bullock said: "I congratulate and thank Sydenham Music for all they have done and hope to see them go from strength to strength. I look forward to both Sydenham Music and the RPO working with us for many years to come."
