One of Sydenham's oldest and, at one time, grandest
pubs. The Sydenham Times of 1862 never lets a week go by without mention of
some new society being set up or important event being conducted under the
auspices of the Golden Lion.
In more recent times the Golden Lion reached its height
of notoriety in March 1987 with the murder of Daniel Morgan after being struck
about the head with an axe as he left the pub. Morgan had been drinking with
his business partner. They both ran an investigation agency in nearby Thornton
Heath. Nobody has ever been charged. The event remains shrouded in mystery and
controversy over the police connections with the agency leading to the whole
case being reviewed by an outside police force.
Today things are much quieter. It is an old fashioned
comfortable and spacious place to sup a pint with no pressure. Lunchtime food
is unashamebly 'old English' pork, beef or lamb. The layout makes it convenient
to meet in semi-privacy. There is also a meeting room to the rear which can be
hired. This is used by the Local Victuallers and the Rotary Club of Forest Hill
& Sydenham.
