At approximately 10:45pm a 41 year old local man was
hit by a black Fiat Punto whilst crossing Sydenham's infamous zebra crossing.
The victim sustained chest injuries and was taken to Kings College Hospital. It
is believed the injuries are not life threatening.
The fact that we appear to have avoided a fatality
will, no doubt, come as a relief to the council officials who ignored protests
from all quarters that this invisible crossing was 'an accident waiting to
happen'. The zebra crossing has been open less than 12 weeks before claiming
its first victim. It came, as predicted, on a dark damp night after the pubs
closed.

The Fiat was coming up the hill towards the roundabout
when the victim, we were told, lurched across the zebra. The Fiat braked but
ended up with its front wheels just passed the crossing. Tests on the scene
showed that its brakes and tyres were in good order. The middle aged driver was
reluctant to discuss the matter but did confirm that he was only a very
occasional user of Sydenham Road and hence may not have been aware as many of
us of the hidden danger.
Sydenham Road was closed by the police from the
roundabout to Silverdale until 00:50 whilst traffic specialists (as can be seen
in the pictures) undertook a thorough survey and tests.
