Connex South Central Rail Services

The geology of south London made tunnelling for the underground very difficult which means Sydenham has to rely on suburban trains for fast access to Central London. Sydenham has three stations on three different lines:

• Sydenham is the main station at the junction of Sydenham Road and Kirkdale and is 15 minutes from London Bridge with links to Charing Cross and the City. Southbound most trains go to Croydon providing connections to Gatwick airport. During the day there is a service every 10 minutes in both directions. In the evening the service is reduced to half hourly and can be overcrowded and uncomfortable.
   
• Lower Sydenham is off Kangley Bridge Road at Bell Green. Trains run four times an hours weekdays to London Bridge taking 19 minutes.
   
• Sydenham Hill is 'over the hill' on the toll road down to Dulwich College and Village. Trains usually run half hourly to London Victoria taking 13 minutes.

London Transport Bus Services

The old No.12 route that transversed central London to Shepherd's Bush has been truncated and renumbered to a less memorable 176.

At midnight this becomes the N176 and the way home from the West End after the last train and taxis reluctant to cross the Thames.

Most of the other services run East West and many go to Crystal Palace - the main south London bus terminus where you can get a connection to almost anywhere.
