Sydenham Banks
Banks & Building Societies - now you see them - now
you don't. Sydenham's own mutual Building Society became part of Cheltenham
& Gloucester and when they rationalised their network - C&G left town
leaving only the old clock behind. You can still see the original clock above
Jessie (between Safeways & Paulro's). Nationwide left town too and the
Woolwich and Abbey National became banks.
The
banks also rationalised - the TSB on the corner of Earlsthorpe Road merged with
Lloyds and is now a curtain shop. Barclays closed but the good news is that
after many years the banking hall has re-opened as the ACTS Credit Union -

The
Midland became HSBC and stripped out its beautiful hardwood interior to be
replaced with 'plastic' wood (ugh!). At least it retained its friendly
cashiers. Lloyds remains a quiet haven - unlike the NatWest which is so popular
it often has queues coming out through the main door!
