Sydenham Station

Sydenham's railway services were operated by Connex South Central - the first train operator to lose their franchise for incompetence. The service is dire, seldom on time and with overcrowded short trains.

This is because the trains ordered by Connex required the 'wrong' sort of electricity. National Rail has now taken over the franchise and is promising to upgrade the power supply. We may see the new trains next year. Until then the misery continues...

Meanwhile the little shop that stands guard on the railway bridge is no longer a gift shop - but an outpost of the PropertyWorld rental agency opposite.

Newlands Road Junction

Looking East down Sydenham Road. This busy street is the link road from the South Circular at Catford to Crystal Palace.

The shops always a'changing. You can see that we have lost Sydenham Fisheries. We still have one butcher - but food shops are losing out to SavaCentre and the other supermarkets. Competition is fierce in the 'Pound Shop' market.

Narborhood Centre

If Sydenham has a centre - it is here. A 1960's development incorporating the main Post Office, a new Budgen's and the a renamed Pukkabar. Over the Post Office is the Narborhood Centre at which Lewisham Social Services provides a range of activities - mostly for the elderly. The Centre has been threatened with closure - a crisis which may have passed

See how things have changed since 1998>>

Mayow Road

Under the ever watchful eye of Lewisham Council - another recent change at the corner of Mayow Road. The Slatter's Bakery chain is no more. The old Sydenham Slatter's is now The Cake Store. A wide range of exotic confectionary.

Fortuneately the Safeway Store opposite has a good reputation for excellent freshly baked bread. French sticks (2 for 59p) means a daily visit from us...

Sydenham Safeways

Not for much longer! Safeways will probably shortly be transformed into Morrisons. Let us hope they keep it open and don't take it too far downmarket. After all if you cheap prices and not so good service you already have the choice of Lidl's and SavaCentre. <Safeway info>

Just beyond Safeways you can see White's Pet Centre. No longer incorporating People & Planet as our Sydenham Traidcraft champions George & Jane Hetherington have retired to the country.
