Looking beyond the
Sailors' memorial <photo 1> we
see the National Sports Centre swiming pool & gynasium complex peering over
the top of a greeny bank.
This is an outstanding
1960s example of 'brutal' architecture loved & hated by different parts of
the community. Its innovative 'A frame' created a wonderful open interior with
an Olympic sized swimming pool and hard spaces for basketball and other games.
Sadly it no longer meets modern standards particulary as the 'wet' and 'dry'
areas are insufficiently insulated.
Its future will be
decided by the LDA when it takes responsibility for the park. See
<here> about their
recent consultation event in the park. |
