16. Upper Terrace

This is where the grand Crystal Palace stood until the fire of 1936. All that is left are the ruined terraces. The amazing water towers designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel were demolished in the war as it was believed they were being used by the Luftwaffe to get their bearings when bombing London.

We do have the tallest structure in London and England's tallest self supporting tower. The tower itself is 196m but standing on top of a hill can be seen from all over London and large parts of Surrey & Kent. It is also the most powerful TV transmitter in the UK pumping out 1000Kw. The transmitter was built and managed by the BBCand now managed by Crown Castle.

About a mile south of here is another smaller TV transmitter built to carry the original ITV network.
