At the end of the upper
terrace is the main BBC transmitter station. This is built into the hill
alongside the main transmitter mast <picture 16> It is not a pretty
site. It was built in the 1960s when the mast carried the BBC TV transmissions
(national radio comes from Wrotham alongside the M20 in Kent) this served the
whole of South East England.
The BBC was forced to
sell off its transmission network and it is now managed by Crown Castle. As can
be seen from the mast itself the the station handles a wide variety of
broadcasting stations both analogue and digital.
